Iris sat in the cozy family room at the train station, waiting for her train. Her grandparent sat beside her, and her parent was nearby. Biscuit, her little dog, rested at her feet. Iris held her stuffed rabbit close against her chest.
Rain tapped on the closed window.
Tap, tap, tap.
Iris tapped her knees to match the sound. Tap, tap, tap. Biscuit lifted his head, and his tail gave a soft thump against the floor.
"Is the window singing?" Iris asked.
"Let's listen," said her grandparent.
The rain tapped a little louder. Iris tapped softly on her knees. Biscuit's tail thumped again.
Then Iris's parent opened a small snack bag. Inside were banana slices and crackers.
"Can you help me make some snacks?" her parent asked.
Iris nodded. She placed a banana slice on a cracker. Then she made another one, and another.
"This one is for you," she said to her grandparent. "And this one is for my parent."
Biscuit sat up tall. His nose wiggled as he watched.
"And Biscuit needs a snack, too!" Iris said.
Her parent gave him a small dog treat. Biscuit took it gently and chewed. His tail tapped the floor like a tiny drum.
Iris carried a snack to her grandparent.
"Here you go," she said.

"Thank you," said her grandparent.
Iris carried another snack to her parent. Then she took her own snack and sat beside the window with her stuffed rabbit in her lap.
Tap, tap, tap.
The sound was softer now. Iris leaned close to the glass. A raindrop slid slowly down the window.
Tap.
Another drop followed.
Tap.
Iris looked down at her knees. They were still. The tapping wasn't coming from her at all. It was coming from the rain.
"The window really is singing!" Iris said.
Her grandparent came to sit beside her. Her parent joined them on the other side. Biscuit curled up near their feet, and Iris tucked the stuffed rabbit beneath her chin.
Together, they listened.
Tap, tap, tap.
The rain slowed. The room grew quiet. Iris began to sing in a soft voice.
"Rain on the window,
soft and slow."
Her grandparent and parent sang along. Biscuit gave one sleepy sigh.
Outside, the last drops slipped down the glass. Inside, Iris leaned against her grandparent while her family waited together. The quiet song faded, leaving only the gentle patter of rain and Biscuit's peaceful breathing.
Talk about the story
1.Who sat beside Iris?
2.What did Iris put on a cracker?
3.What did Iris hear on the window?
