Rain tapped softly on the windows—tick, tick, tick—like tiny fingers playing a quiet song. Alex watched the drops slide down the glass while his older sister, Priya, carried two blankets into the family room.
"Today is perfect for a reading fort," Priya said.
Petal, their white pet rabbit, hopped after her. His nose wiggled as he inspected every corner. He sniffed one blanket, hopped over a cushion, and settled near the basket of books.
Alex smiled. "And I promised to paint a meadow for the fort!"
He hurried to the little table by the window. Priya brought paper, washable paints, and a cup of water. Alex dipped his brush into green paint and swept a long field across the page. Then he added red poppies, yellow daisies, and purple flowers with round, bright centers.
Petal watched from the rug. When Alex painted a tall blue flower, Petal gave a quick hop, as if he liked that one best.
"This meadow needs a sunny sky," Alex said.
He painted the sky light blue and added a warm yellow sun. Outside, the rain kept falling, but on the paper, the meadow looked bright enough to make anyone smile.
Alex held up the painting. "It’s for the fort."
"It’s wonderful," Priya said. "Let’s set it somewhere flat so it can dry."
They placed the painting on top of a low shelf, where Petal couldn’t reach it. Then the building began.
Priya draped one blanket over the back of the sofa. Alex carried cushions from the chairs and lined them up underneath. Together, they tucked another blanket over the cushions and made a small doorway in the front.
"The fort is ready!" Alex announced.
He crawled inside with a picture book. Priya followed, carrying another book. Petal hopped in last.
But there was a problem. The fort had only one little spot in the middle. Alex sat down, and his knee touched Priya’s knee. Priya shifted to the left, and Alex bumped the blanket. Petal tried to turn around, but his fluffy tail brushed against both of them.
"There isn’t enough room," Alex said.
The blanket drooped onto his head.
Priya giggled and lifted it. "We can fix it. Let’s test the space."
First, they crawled out and looked carefully at the cushions. One cushion was much wider than the others, and two small cushions were tucked where their feet needed to go.
Alex pointed. "That big one is taking up the middle."

Together, they pushed it toward the wall. Priya moved the small cushions to the sides, making two soft seats with an open space between them.
Alex crawled inside again. "This is better!"
Then the blanket slipped down once more. It covered the book basket and brushed Petal’s ears.
Petal backed out of the fort and sat beside the sofa. His ears stood tall, and his nose twitched.
"The roof is too low for Petal," Priya said. "And it’s too low for us, too."
Alex looked around. The sofa was sturdy, but the blanket needed something higher to rest on. He brought two firm pillows and placed them on the sofa’s arms. Priya carefully lifted one side of the blanket and raised it over the pillows.
The roof rose like a little tent. Inside, the family room lamp made a warm, golden glow beneath the cloth.
Alex peeked in. "Try it now!"
Priya crawled inside and sat on one side. Alex sat on the other. Petal hopped in and settled between them, tucking his front paws beneath his chest.
"Plenty of room," Priya said.
"Even for a rabbit," Alex added.
Petal stretched out beside the cushions. His long ears rested against the soft blanket, and his whiskers trembled as he grew still.
Alex reached for the book basket. "I choose first."
He picked a picture book about a sleepy bear searching for the perfect place to nap. Priya read the first page, and Alex turned each page carefully. Petal listened without moving, except when a page made a gentle swishing sound.
When the bear found a cozy bed, Alex closed the book. "Now you choose, Priya."
Priya selected a book about a little boat sailing past reeds, frogs, and water lilies. Alex read some of the words while Priya helped with the longer ones. Their voices blended with the rain outside.
After the book, Alex looked toward the shelf. His meadow painting had dried. The colors were bold and cheerful, and every flower seemed to lean toward the sun.
"It belongs in the fort now," he said.
He and Priya carried the painting together. They propped it against the sofa, where everyone could see it. The painted meadow brightened the cozy corner, making the blankets seem warmer and the cushions seem softer.
Petal lifted his head and gazed at the flowers. Alex placed a fresh handful of hay beside him, and Petal began to nibble.
The rain whispered against the windows. Priya opened another book, and Alex leaned close. Under the raised blanket, the three friends read together while the meadow smiled from its place by the pillows.
